Wonders of Romania - Escorted Coach

Take a 7-night escorted coach tour to the southeastern Europe country of Romania, the birthplace of the legend of Dracula. First, spend a night in Bucharest, the capital city. Then spend five nights in medieval villages of Transylvania. Visit Bucovina, which features unique painted monasteries that belong to the UNESCO World Heritage; the famous medieval castle (“Dracula’s Castle”); and Peles Castle, an exquisite piece of architecture that is one of Europe’s most spectacular castles. Return to Bucharest for one more night, and take a panoramic city tour, before departure. Limited Departures. $995 per person based on double occupancy. Optional extension available to Danube Delta.

Day 1, Sunday - Arrive Bucharest
Arrive in Bucharest, capital of Romania. You are met and transferred to your hotel. (Novotel or similar) (D)

Day 2, Monday - Bucharest/Curtea de Arges/Sibiel

After breakfast, depart for Curtea de Arges, former capital of Wallachia. Visit the Episcopal Church where the Romanian kings are buried. Drive along the picturesque Olt Valley to Sibiu, one of the oldest cities in Transylvania. Guided walking tour of the medieval town includes the Main Square, the Evangelical Church, and the Liars' Bridge. Depart for Sibiel, where you visit the Museum of Icons. Overnight in Sibiel. Day 3, Tuesday – Sibiel/Sighisoara/Bistrita

Morning, depart to Sighisoara, birthplace of Vlad the Impaler. En route, visit the UNESCO-protected fortified Church at Biertan. Arrive at Sighisoara and discover the medieval Citadel (a UNESCO World Heritage site), the Clock Tower, the Church on the Hill, and the roofed stairways. After lunch, continue to Targu Mures, with a walking tour through the city center, known for its architecture (the Palace of Culture, the Orthodox churches, and the Teleki-Bolyai Library). Drive on to Bistrita, one of the seven medieval cities in Transylvania and the place where Jonathan Harker, Bram Stoker’s hero, spent the night before arriving at Dracula’s Castle. Day 4, Wednesday – Bistrita/Campulung/Moldevenesc/Gura Himorului
Depart for Bucovina, the “upper land,” which features unique painted monasteries that belong to the UNESCO World Heritage. After crossing the land of Dracula, arrive at Campulung Moldovenesc and visit the Wooden Art Museum. After lunch, visit the Moldovita Monastery, a medieval art treasure. Visit the workshop of Lucia Condrea, the famous creator of painted eggs, and the village of Vatra Moldovitei, with its traditional small houses, old steam train, and unspoiled nature. Day 5, Thursday – Gura Humorului/Brasov

Today, visit Bucovina’s Voronet Monastery, the jewel of Bucovina, known as “the Sistine Chapel of the East.” Continue the drive through the Moldavian villages, with their typical houses. Arrive at the village of Tarpesti, home of the “Neculai Popa” Museum. Afterward, visit the monastery of Agapia. Afternoon, cross the Bicaz Gorges on foot, weather permitting. Arrive at Lacu Rosu (the Red Lake) for a lunch of typical Romanian “gulas.” Continue to Brasov, former Kronstadt, founded by the Saxon colonists, as the south gate of Transylvania. Walking tour through the old town center, includes the Black Church, the biggest Gothic church between Istanbul and Vienna. (Hotel Coroana Brasovului or similar) (B/L)

Day 6, Friday – Brasov
Breakfast at hotel. Travel in and around Brasov. Stopover at Prejmer for a visit to the fortified church, another World Heritage site.  Drive on to Bran and visit the famous medieval castle (Dracula's  Castle) built as a fortress for the citizens of Brasov in 1377 as a defense to the city. Lunch in Bran. Return to Brasov. (B/L)

Day 7, Saturday – Brasov/Bucharest
In the morning, cross the Carpathians toward Sinaia, a scenic mountain resort know as the “the Pearl of the Carpathians.”  Visit Peles Castle, an exquisite piece of architecture that is one of Europe’s most spectacular castles. Travel to Bucharest in time for lunch. On a panoramic city tour, visit the House of Parliament, Europe’s largest building, and take a walking tour in the Old City center. Evening farewell dinner. (Novotel or similar) (B/L/D)

Day 8, Sunday – Depart Bucharest
After breakfast, time at leisure depending on your departure flight. Transfer to the airport for your return flight. Or, take the Danube Delta Extension. (B)

    Day 8 - Bucharest/Danube Delta
    Early morning, depart for Tulcea. After lunch, visit the Danube Delta Museum, before departing by boat to Crisan/Sulina. Check into to your accommodations in the area, where you have a traditional fish meal. (B/L/D)

    Day 9 - Danube Delta
    After breakfast, depart for the south lakes of Sulina to enjoy the Danube Delta. After a three-hour journey, return to Sulina for lunch. Afternoon, visit the town, museum,  old churches and the cemetery. See the picturesque Sulina beach and seaside where the water is not salty, and have a few hours at leisure. Return after sunset and have a traditional dinner, based on fresh fish. Route is decided each day by the guide, depending on water levels of the Danube and the weather. (B/L/D)

    Day 10 - Danube Delta
    After breakfast, we will depart again on water. Travel to Letea Village, with many traditional houses, by boat, going through the Golf of Musura to see K Island, the newest land in Romania and a paradise for birds. Arrive at a point for traveling by safari car to Letea Forest, the northernmost subtropical forest in Europe. See and photograph local attractions, including the famous wild horses, walk in the fine sand and head back to the boat and to Crisan/Sulina. Visit a local farm where lunch is prepared by your hosts at  and visit to scenic local farm in Cardon. Evening farewell dinner. (B/L/D)

    Day 11 – Danube Delta/Bucharest
    Early or packed breakfast before departing for Tulcea. Transfer to Bucharest and check in to your hotel (not included) or at the airport for your onward flight.
